There is nothing quite like a festive wine trip to Calais. It's the perfect opportunity to make that free crossing work for you, and get a truly wonderful winter mini-break thrown in. At Calais' very own Winter Wonderland.
This year the people of Calais have pulled out all of the stops, with a Christmassy programme which is bursting at the seams.
You will be treated to a Christmas Market, ice skating, fire show, and much more. It really is a jam-packed series of events & sights. I mean - you can't miss Santa Claus descending from the top of the belfry!
Here are our favourite picks of the festivities at Calais Winter Wonderland...
Christmas Village & Skating Rink - 17th November to 7th January
At the foot of the Watchtower, you will find an enchanted Christmas village - World of Toys - with an indoor ice-skating rink, vintage double-decker carousel, and Santa’s grotto. If you feel less energetic, you can partake in some chestnuts and a glass of mulled wine instead!
Magic Forest - 25th November to 7th January
At the Town Hall, the square is transformed into a magical forest filled with fairy characters, complete with a nativity crèche and kids’ costumes for festive selfies.
Inside the town hall itself, is Santas workshop as well as stunning magical festive decor.
Ice Sculpture & Fire Show - Saturday 2nd December
The parade will feature a stunning ice sculpture, which after several hours of work, will be unveiled with a magical finale and fire show. Entry is free and the event runs from 2pm to 6pm.
The Great Christmas Parade - Sunday 3rd December
The ‘’Grande Parade’’ returns for a fun-filled spectacle between Place Crèvecoeur and Place d'Armes. A festive train will lead a procession of floats filled with dancers, acrobats, elves, snowmen and animated toys through the town’s gorgeously illuminated streets. You may even see a leprechaun!
Christmas Market - 8th December to 17th December
At the Grand Théâtre, you will discover eighty stalls selling local specialities such as Saint Nicholas gingerbread cookies, crafts, and many other gifts and trinkets, perfect for picking up some unusual stocking fillers.
There is also storytelling by an elf in Mother Christmas's Cottage, plus musical surprises, which are planned throughout the ten days of the market.
