About Languedoc-Roussillon
France's Languedoc-Rousillon region is located in the south of the country, close to the Mediterranean coastline. It stretches from the Spanish border to just beyond the city of Montpellier and brings together two former well-known wine regions: Languedoc and Roussillon. This merger is the reason why the region combines some of the Catalan and Spanish influences of Roussillon with the more traditionally French influences of Languedoc.
Languedoc-Roussillon has a Mediterranean climate, which makes it suitable for growing a variety of grapes. In terms of grapes grown in the region, Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan rank among the most commonly used for red wine varieties, while white wine is made using grapes like Chardonnay, Mauzac and Chenin Blanc.
