About Douro
Located in northern Portugal, the Douro wine region is named after the Douro river and spans from the Spanish border to around 100km inland from the city of Porto. It has DOC designation and is known for both its mountainous terrain and Mediterranean climate. Although Douro is most commonly associated with Port wine production, the region actually produces a fairly even split of Port and table wine.
Most wines in the region are red and vary from light, Bordeaux style wines, to much more dark, full-flavoured options. The region is estimated to house around 80 different grape varieties, but among the most widely-planted and highly regarded are black grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca, while some of the most popular white grape varieties include Verdelho and Donzelinho Branco.
