The Rhone wine region is named after the Rhone valley and is situated in southern France. It is broadly divided into a northern section and a southern section, with the two areas having different climates and grape types. The northern section has a continental climate, characterised by warm summers and harsh winters, while the southern section has a Mediterranean climate, with even warmer and drier summers, as well as milder winters.

Rhone's northern area is especially well known for its Shiraz red wine, and its Viognier and Roussanne white wines. It is the less prolific area, but has a reputation for high quality. On the other hand, the southern section of the region produces more wine, with Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah among the most common grapes. The red wines produced in the south are often characterised by their black fruit or prune-like aromas.
