About Loire Valley Wine

The Loire Valley is a French wine region, which runs alongside the Loire River. It stretches from the plains on the Atlantic coast, near the city of Nantes, through to the Sancerre region of north-central France and contains a number of sub-regions, including Muscadet, Anjou-Saumur, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. It has a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and varied terrain, allowing for a wide range of different grapes to be grown.

The Melon de Bourgogne grape is commonplace in the west of the region and is used to create Muscadet white wine, while the Cabernet franc grape is grown in the vineyards near Chinon, where much of the region's red wine is made. These red wines are known for their raspberry fruit and graphite qualities. Other grapes that are grown in Loire Valley include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot noir.
