About Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio is produced all over the world and is possibly one of the worlds favourite white wines due to its light, refreshing, easy drinking nature. It is a young, zesty, white wine with flavours of lemons, limes, green apples and honeysuckle.
Contrary to popular belief, Pinot Grigio was born in Burgundy, France where it is known as Pinot Gris. When the grape made its way to northern Italy the real story of Pinot Grigio begun. The wine found wide success in the regions of Northeastern Italy: Lombardy, the Veneto, Friuli, Trentino and Alto Adige, and soon became one of Italy's most popular wines.
Although the grape is the same, there are significant differences between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris in terms of style. The Italian style Pinot Grigio wines are typically lighter-bodied, crisp, fresh, with vibrant stone fruit and floral aromas and a touch of spice - this style has been heavily adopted and is now produced throughout the world. Alsace Pinot Gris wines are more full-bodied, richer, spicier, and more viscous in texture and are the exception which tend to age well.
At the Calais Wine Superstore we stock a vast array of popular pinot grigio wines from the big brands you know and love such as Lindemans Bin 85 Pinot Grigio, as well as some lesser known stars, which you are welcome to come and try in our tasting room - we know you will love them!
If you fancy giving Pinot Gris a whirl we highly recommend the Waimea Pinot Gris, an extremely moreish wine with biscuity texture and quince aromas.
