About Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah, originating from France, became known by its alternate name of Shiraz when arriving in Australia. This has been adopted in parts of the new world, but the grape variety, Syrah/Shiraz, is one and the same. Shiraz has become so important to the Australian wine scene, it is the most planted grape variety in most Australian vineyards and has particular popularity in regions such as Barossa Valley.

Though the grape is identical, there are distinct differences between the Shiraz produced in Australia and Syrah.

Shiraz wines are full bodied with rich fruit flavours such as plum, blackberry and cherry, and hints of spice. Other parts of the new world outside of Australia have also adopted this fruit forward style and also named their Syrah - Shiraz. Another Australian favourite is the popular blend of Cabernet - Shiraz, an easy drinking red wine blend which is popular the world over.

Syrah on the other hand, plays a big role in the Rhone Valley. Here you will find full bodied wines which are more complex and suitable to ageing. Traditionally in France, Syrah is used as a varietal grape variety or blended with grenache and mouvedre to create Côtes du Rhône blends.

As you would expect, we have a vast selection of old world Syrah from Hermitage, Cote Rotie to Cotes du Rhone. You will also find an unrivaled selection of Shiraz from well know names such as Hardy's, Lindemans and more - at prices you wont find in your UK supermarket. Come visit us in Calais and visit our tasting room where you can taste over 150 wines before you buy - you may well find a new firm favourite.
