About Red Wine
A good quality red wine is something to be savoured and enjoyed. Made from dark coloured grape varieties, the deep red colour comes from the skin of the grape, and depending on the grape variety can vary from a deep thick red to a light almost pink hue. Red wine is produced throughout the wine marking world, from New World to Old World.
There is a vast selection of red wine types, from big and bold, to elegant and dry, or sweet and simple every day wines. A lot depends on where the grapes are from and how they are produced, but the grape variety plays the most important part. Most red wine varietals grow best in warmer climates, where they can ripen fully before harvesting.
The most well known red wine grape varieties you will be sure to have heard of such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Shiraz (or Syrah). These grape varieties are produced in all of the world's top winemaking regions and you will find superb examples and some firm favourites from France, Italy, Australia, Chile, South Africa and more.
There are many more regional red grape varieties from around the globe such as Sangiovese from Italy, or Tempranillo from Spain. If you want to try something new why not trial a regional red wine variety which may be new to you in our tasting room, where we always have at least 150 different wines open to taste. You may come home from Calais with a newly found favourite red, and it will be sure to be at an unbeatable price too.
