About South African Wine

South Africa has a wine making history which dates back to the 17th century and is the oldest 'New World' wine producing country. South Africa can boast a wide variety of styles of wine and shows its maturity by its particular success with varietal blends. Wines from South Africa are generally varietally labelled and the country produces some of the worlds best sauvignon blanc. It is also known for its Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Cabernet. South Africa's most famous grapes - white chenin blanc and red pinotage - may be less familiar unless you are already a South African wine convert.

South Africa as a country is committed to sustainable wine farming and in 2010 launched the integrity and sustainably certified seal. This certifies that the wine has been made in a manner that is respectful to nature and guarantees sustainable wine production. To date, over 95% of the South African wine industry has been following sustainable wine-growing and winemaking principles.

South African wines are great value and you can pick up some of your favourite brands at a snip of the UK price at The Calais Wine Superstore. We stock the ever popular Kudu Plains and Kumala, which are always a good bet in terms of quality and price. But we also offer much more - if you fancy something different why not try a native Pinotage for a full bodied wine, or Loch Fyne Chenin Blanc - stunning value as some of the best Chenin outside the Loire.
