About New Zealand Wine

New Zealand is now regarded as one of the premier new world wine producers, on par with some of the best, and can boast an industry that exports award winning wines throughout the world. New Zealand's relatively young wine industry can thank innovative New Zealand vineyard owners and winemakers for its success as they have taken a traditional art to new levels.

The New Zealand wine industry has a high level of commitment to sustainable production. Over a decade ago they launched a holistic vineyard programme, Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ), which has been adopted by growers from all the grape growing regions. It is estimated that over 94% of the producing vineyard area is participating in SWNZ.

New Zealand produces a variety of wine but the most famous are the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc white wines made in Marlborough which in recent years have become almost iconic. There is however more to the New Zealand wine scene than Marlborough, or Kiwi Sauvignon as it is also known. Pinot noir has also proven to be a natural success, seemingly well suited to New Zealand's terroir. Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are grown in the cooler parts of the South Island, and Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the warmer parts of the North Island with great results.

At the Calais Wine Superstore we love a good Kiwi and have favourite wines from Villa Maria, Esk Valley and more. Discover more - like the Matua Pinot Noir Rosé which is simply sublime - in our temperature controlled tasting room. Or simply stock up on our great range of New Zealand Sauvignons!
