The oldest monument in Calais, the Notre-Dame church was built in the 13th century. It is noteworthy not only for this but for its attraction of Charles de Gaulle in 1921 to confirm his marriage to Yvonne Vendroux.

When construction began in the 13th century the churches architecture was heavily influenced by the Flemish before English architects took over in the fourteenth century steering the design into a Gothic/French hybrid.

The church took 100 years to complete and is now acclaimed as the only English styled church in France.

The church was severely damaged during the Second World War with restoration still underway to this day.
