At the Musée de la Mine Jacques Deramaux in Auchel for just €5 you can see a film charting the history of the mine, then climb into a cage and descend to the coal face where a former miner will guide you through 250 metres of underground galleries charting French coal-mining methods since 1734.

You made need a drink after that, so perhaps save your visit to the The Calais Wine Superstore for the trip back.

For those interested in militaria, the Museum of the Atlantic Wall is packed with information and artifacts from the Nazi occupation of the area during World War II.
