In Part 3 of a 5 part series, Henry reviews hotels and restaurants around Calais. Why not stay the night in Calais and drive back at your leisure?

I’ve stayed in a few different hotels in and around Calais, but I always book through the same website, booking.com

They have a good selection from cheap and cheerful (that’s me) up to some very comfy stuff if your budget allows.  This time we ended up in The Hotel Jacquard which happily had a proper triple room (three single beds.) Excellent location in Calais with several nice local restaurants to choose from, and reasonably priced at 65€ for the room, or £18 apiece.

We ate in the nearby Mirador, which we’ve used before, a real traditional place with good prix fixe menus at 18€, decent carafe (litre) of house wine for 11€.  We also like the look of La Buissoniere and Au Calice, both a stone's throw from the hotel.

If you venture along the coast, the lovely Cote d’Opale, the Hotel Escalles in Escalles near Cap Blanc Nez is still good but sadly the once excellent restaurant has gone downhill.  The cheapest we’ve had is the Premiere Classe opposite the station.  First class it ain’t but at £36 it’s certainly value.

Even on Sunday morning there are boulangeries open for business from about eight so it’s a croque monsieur on the way to the store and a croissant to have with our coffee on the way home. A particularly good one is a few hundred yards down the Boulevard Jacquard just where you turn right to the car ferry.

Next week, Henry reflects on his shopping experience at The Calais Wine Superstore.
